In July, we shared a list of some famous singers who also happen to collect art. The list included Madonna, Elton John and Beyoncé and Jay-Z but there are many other celebrities out there who have a sharp eye for art and a collection to prove it. Due to popular demand we’ve decided to share with you some more top celebrities who have a love of art.
Named after one of the most famous artists of all time, produced a Netflix documentary about an obscure Polish artist, owns a valuable art collection estimated at $10 million. Art runs in DiCaprio’s veins.
The Academy Award-winning actor would regularly attend Art Basel and is often spotted at auctions and major sales. He has even orchestrated an auction with Christie’s back in 2013 to help raise money for climate change awareness.
For DiCaprio, climate change awareness and art run parallel together. His documentary, ‘Before the Flood’, opens with a personal monologue where he mentions ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ by Hieronymus Bosch. The painting hung over his crib as a child and was one of his earliest memories: “I would stare at it before I went to sleep,” he explained, noting some of its themes—”over-population, debauchery, exodus.”
So, what does Leonardo DiCaprio’s personal art collection look like? Here’s just a few notable pieces:
- Walton Ford’s ‘The Tigress’ (2013)
- Pablo Picasso’s drawing, ‘Fillette’ (1939)
- Robert Crumb’s ‘Mr. Natural’ (1976)
- ‘Standard Station’ by Ed Ruscha (1966)
- Heinz Schulz-Neudamm’s ‘Metropolis’ (1926)
In 2017, DiCaprio had to turn over a Picasso painting and a Basquiat collage to the US authorities as part of an investigation into the funding of ‘The Wolf of Wallstreet’.
KANYE WEST & KIM KARDASHIAN
Power couple, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian AKA Kimye, have built up a massive empire between the two of them over the years: rapper/fashion designer/presidential candidate, Kanye West has recently moved into home designs and architecture. Kim Kardashian has also gained success in her own right: She’s a reality TV star and influencer turned fashion designer and makeup mogal. She’s now pursuing a law career by taking part in a Law Office Chambers program. Together they have a stake in Adidas, worth up to $50 million and Nike, which is estimated at $25 million. But it doesn’t stop there. All this success and a bottomless bank account has allowed the couple to expand their empire into the art world and start an art collection for themselves.
British street artist, Bambi, was commissioned by West to paint an almost-nude portrait of Kardashian, which he gave to her as a wedding gift. The painting, which is titled ‘Perfect Bitch’, features Kim Kardashian wearing a thong and a pair of Christian Louboutin heels. Bambi’s agent and manager, Leonard Villa told The Mirror that the rapper’s brief was simple, “something regal but typically Kim”.
Kanye has also commissioned George Condo to hand paint Hermès Birkin bags for his wife’s Christmas. A Birkin of that size is priced at around $16,000 while one of Condo’s paintings has sold for $1.3million at auction. You can only imagine how much that bag is worth. But Kanye’s investment in art has been going on for years: he has previously commissioned Condo to design past album covers and Takashi Murakami has also been asked to create some art for him – he’s responsible for the art on the ‘Graduation’ and ‘Kids See Ghosts’ album cover.
SEAN “P DIDDY” COMBS
According to Quincy Brown, Diddy’s son, “He’s done it all. What’s left? Collecting art.”
This statement came after P Diddy made art history back in 2018 after purchasing Kerry James Marshall’s painting, ‘Past Times’, for a record $21 million at a Sotheby’s auction. The most anyone has ever paid for a piece of art created by a living black artist.
But this isn’t the only art investment the music mogul has made: he’s been spotted at Art Basel Miami Beach and has been working with art advisor, Maria Brito.
America’s favourite TV personality Oprah Winfrey, is noted for her love of art, particularly Americana art and the works produced by African American artists.
Like Combs, she has also caused a stir in the art world when she made some extra pocket money consigning a Gustav Klimt full-length portrait back in 2016. How much did it go for? A cool $150 million.
The painting itself has quite an interesting history. Titled ‘Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II’ (1912), it was seized by the Nazis during World War II. The heirs to the painting won a lengthy legal battle with the Austrian State Museum and later sold it in 2006 for $87.9 million.
Back in 2015, Winfrey auctioned off over 500 pieces of furniture, paintings, prints, porcelains, crystals and accessories from her Chicago home. The sale grossed almost $800,000 and proceeds went to The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation.
Some of the pieces of art auctioned off in the Oprah Winfrey Auction were an oil painting titled ‘The Little Mother’ by Hovsep Pushman and Richard Edward Miller‘s ‘The Red Scarf’.
BRAD PITT & ANGELINA JOLIE
Prior to their split in 2016, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had built up a magnificent art collection, estimated to be worth around $25 million, over their 12 year relationship. But since then, Brad Pitt has continued to admire and acquire art, amassing an impressive private collection.
In January 2020, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio joined comedian Marc Maron on his podcast, WTF. During the episode, the two Hollywood actors talked about sculpture practice and their private art collections. In the podcast, Pitt says that he finds sculpting and collecting art a “very meditative” practice. He also made a point of noting, “The word ‘collection’ kind of bothers me,” implying that the term is too formal for him.
So, what did Pitt and Jolie have stacked away in their trove? Although they have been very secretive about their collection (the couple was reportedly building a “sort-of private gallery”), we do know that their collection features Banksy, Richard Serra and Dom Pattinson’s ‘Hope’ series, which was gifted to the couple on their wedding day.
