‘Margaret Thatcher and Deng Xiaoping Negotiating the Return of Hong Kong’ is a unique work of art by the Polish artist Julita Malinowska. It depicts Margaret Thatcher and Deng Xiaoping sitting at the beach and negotiating the return of Hong Kong. Julita has taken a very serious and heavy subject and turned it into an almost relaxing scene. This shows how scenery and perspective play a vital role in perception and how even the most serious political matters can be turned into a lovely day at the beach.

This painting was part of an art experiment Julita took part in. A group of artists and a poet gathered in a German town of Herringsdorf. The poet, Piotr Olszówka, was asked to write the title of each painting. Julita created a total of 11 paintings during this experiment.

‘Margaret Thatcher and Deng Xiaoping Negotiating the Return of Hong Kong’ is a unique work of art created using oil paint on canvas. It measures 18 x 20 x 2 cm.”
