THE BA JIA JIANG
‘The Ba Jia Jiang’ is a limited edition photograph by the fine art travel photographer & journalist Ben Mckechnie. This image is taken from Ben’s long-term project “Documenting Taiwan’s Culture”. It depicts one of the Ba Jia Jiang, gods of the underworld and fearsome bodyguards of important temples. Due to their elusive nature, it took Ben 3 years of visiting ancient festivals and celebrations to get this perfect shot.
“This image’s theme is serenity in the face of chaos. The Ba Jia Jiang’s ability to remain calm and unblinking as 1000 firecrackers ignited directly beneath his feet was astonishing to see; earplugs in and face mask on to protect myself against the cacophony and fumes, I channelled some inner calm to steady myself amidst the chaos and pressed the shutter.” — Ben Mckechnie
