ABOUT BLEK LE RAT
Xavier Prou, better know as Blek le Rat, is the father of stencil art. Banksy might have become the bigger name, but Blek was the first to plant his proverbial flag into to the world of stencil art. To back up that statement, Banksy once said “every time I think I’ve painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek le Rat has done it as well, only twenty years earlier.” When asked if he felt that Banksy copied his work, Blek le Rat stated that he was the old man and that Banksy the new kid. Blek was actually flattered that he was the inspiration for a lot of Banksy's works.
A very recognisable symbol in Blek's art is the rat. The rat has taken a steadfast place in the world of street art. Blek le Rat described the rat as the only “true animal in the city”, one which “spreads the plague everywhere, just like street art”. He even made the rat part of his name. Blek le Rat originated from comic Blek le Roc. Roc become rat. That is not just for the symbolic value, but also as an anagram for “art”.
WHY A "BLEK" MIGHT BE RIGHT FOR YOU.
Blek has made numerous wonderful works in past decades. His original works are very rare and hard to come by. His print are a better starting point. They are professionally created with bright colours, excellent details and printed on museum grade paper. His iconic Rat No 5 is a great example of the fine print work that he has to offer.
It might not come as a surprise that his prints and originals can be found all over the world. One will encounter them in private collections, galleries, museums and, especially, on the corner of the streets of Paris.
Blek’s work will brighten up any interior and will make for an excellent talking point. His work, especially the one’s depicting his iconic rat, stand out in such a way that they will catch your eye, but don’t overshadow other works of art or decorative pieces. In short, a must have for any modern day (street) art collector.
