“The erotic is a measure between the beginnings of our sense of self and the chaos of our strongest feelings. It is an internal sense of satisfaction to which, once we have experienced it, we know we can aspire.” - Audre Lorde
Erotic art. A broad style of art intended to provoke the senses. Erotic art is depicted in almost any kind of visual medium including, drawings, paintings and photographs. The style has been around for centuries and crops up in many different cultures the world over.
A prehistoric carving of a vulva was discovered on the cave walls of Abri Castanet in Southern France. An iconic limestone sculpture located in a small village in Austria, dated between 28,000 B.C. and 25,000 B.C, is known as ‘Venus of Willendorf’ and depicts a fertile female nude.
The ancient Greeks loved to throw a good symposium and recreate the wild orgy-like parties on pottery. And the ancient Peruvian civilization Moche, were no different: they would produce ceramics depicting their sexual activity, in all kinds of positions.
Fast forward to 1866 and Gustav Courbet’s ‘The Origin of the World’ shook up the art world. Depicting a close-up of a vagina, Courbet was famous for taking on societal standards of art.
Japan’s Shunga are the erotic woodblock prints that gained popularity during the Edo period around the turn of the 19th century. The renderings were popular among all members of society: they were given to samurais for good luck and gifted to new brides as sexual guides. Imagery varied from masturbation and cullilingus to the more obscure octopus sex.
Yet, erotic art still, to this day, remains a taboo subject. Thankfully to many great artists and collectors this taboo is slowly fading away.
Here at UP & COMING ART, we have a diverse selection of erotic art in our collection, varying in medium, theme, price and size.
Anamorphic artist Gerke Rienks, combines the anamorphic style known as paper cuts, with erotic art. His subject of choice is women and the female body.
French illustrator and artist Philippe Grimaud, has made a name for himself with his erotic art creations. Grimaud depicts famous fictional characters in a rather provocative manner, from a post-coitus Superman to Betty Boop in a seductive dress, holding a smoking gun.
Street artist BASM has also produced some erotic art. Titled ‘Booty Call’, BASM depicts Spider Man making his way to an attractive lady lying across a bed, awaiting his arrival.
