CATEGORY
A painting, a multiple or a drawing perhaps?
Categories are best described as “different kinds of art”. The most popular categories are PAINTINGS and PRINTS. But don’t limited yourself to those. You would be missing out on so much more extraordinary art.
For example, have a look at MULTIPLES. Multiples are limited edition art objects. They can range from tea towels to face masks. Great to add to your collection.
Or, have a look at MIXED MEDIA. Literally, a mixture of different mediums. Just a couple examples: Acrylic paint on book pages, giclee print hand finished with acrylic and so on.
RARITY
One of a kind or limited to just a couple?
UNIQUE works of art, also known as originals, are uniquely crafted artworks. The artist made only one of these pieces. It’s truly one of a kind.
LIMITED EDITIONS are very common in the artworld. Especially limited edition copies of a unique work. It’s the artist’s way of making sure that the work is available for many to enjoy and collect.
Unique works of art are, most of the time, more expensive compared to limited editions. The reason? That’s quite simple. There is only one of them. Some unique artworks take months to create. So, it stands to reason that the artist wants a bit more for it.
If you’re looking for a more affordable work of art, go for a limited edition. Don’t think this is second best. The quality of limited editions is so high that it’s hard to distinguish them from the original work. And, there are a lot more to choose from.
STYLE
There are no wrong choices
Fauvism, Neo-Expressionism, pop art, street art and loads more. All are different art styles. You might also refer to them as ‘art movements’. In other words, these styles describe a certain type of art that can be classified together. Each style has its own key features.
Let’s talk about a relatively new, but extremely important style; Pop art. Pop art is art about popular culture. And that’s also how you recognize it. Do you see a painting with loads of reference to popular culture, you can bet it’s pop art.
Each style has its own characteristics. Why don’t you try a couple and see if you can spot them. Maybe you even develop a favourite.
