Art is an essential component of any home. Whether you’re redecorating your living space or you’ve just received the keys to your new home and ready to start remodelling, hanging art is essential to the interior design of your home. There are so many reasons why art is so important in interior design, but here are just a few you should become familiar with before embarking on your interior design project.

CREATES A FOCAL POINT

Art, as we all know, comes in many shapes and sizes. A piece of art you choose to display in your living room could be a small, elegant sculpture placed on the mantel, or it could be a large painting hanging on the wall. However, it’s worth remembering that your room needs a focal point when decorating. You want the focal point to compliment the room and stand out, all while attracting the attention of visitors.

Choosing to purchase an oversized piece of art would be a good option for an artistic focal point, especially if the space is open-plan, airy, light and minimalist. Try and avoid cluttering the space around the piece of art – you don’t want furniture or other artwork to take away from the pièce de résistance. Find an empty wall and proudly showcase your artwork.

If you are decorating a smaller room with little natural light, don’t try to squeeze an oversized painting into a small space – it’s only going to overwhelm the room. Choose a piece of art that would work proportionately to the size of the room and hang it on a wall that has a good amount of light – you want it to attract the eye. Again, don’t over-clutter the space – we don’t want the artwork to become drowned out by every other piece of furniture in your home.

ART ADDS A TOUCH OF PERSONALITY

When you’re decorating your home, you want to express who you are. This is your living space and you want to feel comfortable when you’re in it. From the shape of the sofa to the colour of the walls, you want your home interior to reflect your style, personality and creativity. This also goes for the art in your home.

Maybe you have a passion for ballet and you want to collect art that reflects your love of dance. You might enjoy reading and collecting comics and you would like to hang some prints that feature your favourite comic book heroes. Whatever it might be, the art you hang is just as essential as the rest of the interior design in your home when it comes to expressing who you are.

Take a moment to consider what style of art you enjoy, whether it’s pop art, abstract or landscape. What subject would you like the artwork to portray? Is there a particular theme? Once you’ve decided on these aspects that reflect your own personality, you can now think about the room you would like to showcase the art. Is it spacious or cosy? Is there a lot of colour or is it minimalist? Taking these details into account, you can really express your personality in the showcasing of your art collection.

ART INJECTS LIFE INTO YOUR HOME

Decorating your home in a minimalistic style is always a great option: it’s clean, timeless and easy to maintain. But with all those white walls and open space, you may find that your home is lacking in vivacity. That’s where art comes in. Injecting colour and patterns into a minimalist interior will give the space a whole new lease of life.

A piece of artwork can also add texture to the room. Whether it’s an acrylic wall hanging or a marble sculpture. From the colour to the texture, art includes another element to a space that can bring your home to life.

ART COMPLEMENTS THE COLOUR PALETTE OF YOUR HOME

When redecorating or designing a home interior, it’s always wise to follow a colour palette. The colour of the walls should complement the sofa. The rug shouldn’t be clashing with the cushions or throws. Once you’ve chosen a colour palette for the room, then you can choose a piece of art that would tie the whole room together. It will accentuate the colours of the room and influence the tone and atmosphere of the space.

If you are unsure of how to choose a piece of art that suits the colour palette of the room, or you just can’t find the right artwork that complements the decor, opt for a simple black and white photograph or a natural, monotone painting. That way, you still have something to fill a wall and it won’t risk clashing with the decor.

ART FINISHES A ROOM

It doesn’t matter how much work or money you put into designing the interior of your home, if a room doesn’t have a piece of art hanging on the wall, it will only appear incomplete. Art is the finishing touch to any home redecoration project. It’s that extra element that transforms a home space from being functional and monotone to homely and meticulously detailed. In saying that, it’s not all about choosing any piece of art you may come across, you still have to consider the above points we previously mentioned.

Don’t be afraid of showcasing your art piece to the world – find an empty wall and bring life and creativity into your home. When talking about interior design, art is always essential.
